Why Choose Natural Alternatives Over OTC Cough Medicines?

When dealing with coughs and respiratory discomfort, many people turn to over-the-counter (OTC) medications for relief. While these may provide temporary benefits, it’s important to be aware of potential risks associated with some common ingredients in these products. Always read the ingredient labels!

Harmful Ingredients Found in OTC Cough and Lung Medicines

  1. Dextromethorphan (DMX):

    • Found in many cough suppressants, DMX works by dulling the brain’s cough reflex. While this may reduce coughing, it can also lead to drowsiness, confusion, and, in some cases, dependency if misused. Also our bodies need to get the gunk out! We just need to handle it the right way.
  2. Pseudoephedrine:

    • Commonly used in decongestants, pseudoephedrine can raise blood pressure and cause jitters, insomnia, or even heart palpitations in some people.
  3. Alcohol and Artificial Sweeteners:

    • Many liquid cough syrups contain high levels of alcohol or artificial sweeteners like sorbitol or aspartame, which can be problematic for children, individuals with alcohol sensitivities, or those avoiding synthetic ingredients. They also are not great for our liver!
  4. Acetaminophen:

    • Often added to multi-symptom cold medicines, acetaminophen can cause liver damage when taken in high doses or combined with other medications containing acetaminophen. Acetaminophen is the leading cause of liver disease after alcohol.

Why Avoid These Ingredients?

  • Temporary Relief, Not Healing: These medications often mask symptoms without addressing the underlying issue.
  • Side Effects: Jitters, drowsiness, and digestive upset are common, making them uncomfortable to use.
  • Toxic Overload: Frequent use of synthetic chemicals can contribute to a higher toxic burden on the liver and other organs over time.
  • Risk of Overuse: Some OTC ingredients can be habit-forming or harmful when taken in excess.

By contrast, natural remedies like herbal teas focus on comfort and hydration, supporting your body without introducing synthetic chemicals. While herbal teas are not a replacement for medical care, they can be a gentle addition to your routine.

Peppermint and eucalyptus are known for their refreshing, aromatic qualities. They create a cooling sensation and can help provide comfort when you’re feeling stuffy or under the weather.

Can I drink the Breath Well Tea Blend daily?

This tea is best enjoyed in moderation, for 2-4 weeks at a time, as needed. It’s always a good idea to give your body a break between herbal regimens and consult a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
