Our Favorite Homemade Gummies: From Fire Cider to Elderberry & Beyond

When I think of gummies, I tend to think of the brightly colored red, green, and yellow gummy bears of my childhood. While they bring back nostalgic memories of traveling to California to visit family, I shudder now as an adult when I think about what they are made with… corn syrup, synthetic dyes like red 40, and a whole host of ingredients that are just not good for us.

It’s time to bring back the nostalgia of gummies while ditching the less-than-desirable ingredients. Of course, if you know me, you know that I’m not just going to remake these with healthier ingredients — I’m going to add an herbalism element as well!

We’ve rounded up our favorite gummy recipes, from the ever-famous, must-have elderberry gummies to the lesser-known ones made with fire cider, ashwagandha, turmeric, and more. We will share step-by-step instructions and all about the benefits of the ingredients. Whether you want to make these homemade gummies for healthier memories or as a practical herbal supplement, you will surely have fun with this herbal project!

How Homemade Gummies Became So Popular

Wellness gummies have been around for a while now, but in the past ten years, there has been a rise in their popularity. Instead of buying them in-store, it seems like more and more people have started to make their own gummies at home.

And with good reason, as there is an increased awareness about the harms of artificial ingredients. Synthetic dyes are making the news and will soon be banned in 2026 and beyond, with good reason (Source). Natural, God-made ingredients provide a better alternative!

As we watch the era of synthetic dyes come to a close, DIY culture continues to grow and expand, with social media making it even easier to share and learn new recipes, including ones for gummies!  I'm excited to share these recipes for my favorite healthy gummies with you today!

I think most people would agree that gummies are loved by all ages. Making gummies with herbs, fruit, and teas has reminded me just how beautiful it is to be able to enjoy the natural gifts that God has blessed us with. And while homemade gummies can bring back so many great childhood memories, they can also serve a medicinal purpose too.

Reasons to Make DIY Gummies

On top of gummies being a delicious treat, there are plenty of other practical reasons to make your own. Here are some of the top benefits of making homemade gummies.

  • Healthier ingredients: Making gummies at home allows you to skip the junk and use real ingredients that you can trust. You know exactly what is going into the recipe every time, so you can enjoy them worry-free.
  • Fun: Gummies are just as fun to eat as they are to make! They make taking your herbs more pleasant and can also appeal to little children who may otherwise protest against taking their herbal supplements.
  • Gut health: The key ingredients used to make homemade gummies can boost your gut health. Grass-fed gelatin, for example, is rich in collagen, which helps to strengthen the gut lining. If you are vegan, you can use agar agar powder instead. This ingredient is rich in fiber, which helps promote a healthy gut.
  • Affordable: Store-bought gummies can get pretty pricey. Luckily, you can make your own large batch at home for a fraction of the cost.
  • Customizable: There are so many different ingredients that you can use, meaning that you can personalize recipes based on your own personal health needs or preferences.

Basic Things You Need to Make Gummies from Scratch

While every homemade gummies recipe will be slightly different, there are some basic ingredients and supplies that you can expect to use each time you make a batch from scratch. In addition to your key ingredients, make sure to have your customization ingredients ready. These can include your favorite herbs, teas, or fruits of choice.

Key Ingredients

  • Base liquid (such as water or apple cider vinegar)

Our Favorite Farmhouse Gummy Recipes

When it comes to homemade gummies, it’s hard to pick just one favorite recipe! Here are a few of our farmhouse-style favorites, loaded with natural sweetness and spice, and of course, some incredible health benefits.

Apple Cider Vinegar Gummies

This recipe is made with apple cider vinegar and any herbal loose-leaf tea of choice. Apple cider vinegar can support healthy digestion. It can also aid in balancing blood sugar, which is especially helpful for people struggling with insulin resistance. You can find the full recipe and instruction video for how to make apple cider vinegar gummies here.

Elderberry Gummies

Our take on this popular flavor of gummies features sea moss, apple juice, and homemade elderberry syrup. Elderberries have health benefits as they are rich in antioxidants, have anti-inflammatory properties, and can help boost your immune system. Many people use elderberries as a natural remedy to fight cold and flu symptoms. The full recipe for these elderberry-infused treats is available in our sea moss gummies post.

Fire Cider Gummies

These spicy gummies are made with our Farmhouse Dry Fire Cider Mix. Fire cider is an herbal concoction made from anti-inflammatory herbs such as ginger, garlic, and horseradish. The ingredients in this homemade gummies recipe can help improve blood flow, support healthy digestion, and also clear up congestionStep-by-Step Instructions:

Ashwagandha Gummies

Made with ashwagandha powder, cinnamon, ginger, and our Farmhouse Barn Raising Berry Herbal Tea, these spicy gummies have a warm and rich flavor. Ashwagandha helps strengthen the immune system while also helping to reduce inflammation in the body. This herb is also recognized for its ability to balance hormones and is often used to reduce stress and anxiety

Turmeric and Ginger Gummies

Ginger and turmeric are the key ingredients in these spicy gummies. Ginger root is known for its anti-inflammatory properties and its ability to boost immunity and improve blood flow. Turmeric is rich in antioxidants and is often used to support joint health, as well as liver and brain function

These two herbs are often paired together in teas, gummies, and other medicinal items to help reduce inflammation, boost immunity, and improve digestion. Another great reason to pair them together is the way that they balance out each other: the spice of ginger and the earthiness of turmeric combine to create a warm and satisfying flavor. Step-by-Step Instructions:

Cranberry Gummies

This homemade gummies recipe is made with our Coastal Cranberry Spice Herbal Tea. These sweet and spicy gummies offer comfort and relief, made with ingredients that provide urinary support. While cranberries are most often associated with urinary tract support (used to fight UTIs), they are also loaded with a number of other benefits. Some of these include being rich in antioxidants, supporting heart health, and boosting immunity.

Homemade Gummies Frequently Asked Questions

Why is grass-fed gelatin best for gummies?

Grass-fed gelatin is known for its high quality and high level of nutrients, including collagen and other minerals. Its high collagen content will allow you to make gummies that support joint, digestive, and gut health. It is also free from synthetic ingredients and artificial preservatives that harm the body. On the farm, we find this simple to use in all of our gelatin needs, but for those who need a vegan option, agar works well too, though it does not carry the same benefits.

How do I store homemade fruit gummies?

Homemade gummies will last for up to two weeks if stored properly. For the best results, store in an airtight container in the refrigerator. If storing in layers, you may want to place parchment paper in between each layer to prevent the gummy pieces from sticking together. Though in our home, we found they don't last two weeks because we eat them all! It must be time to make more!

Are herbal gummies safe for kids?

Generally speaking, yes! Gummies made with natural herbal ingredients will likely be safe for kids to consume. However, just because herbal gummies are made with natural ingredients doesn't make all herbs safe for children. Make sure to consult a good herbal monograph book before giving any herb to your child or taking them yourself, as everyone has different reactions, takes different medications that herbs could contraindicate, and not every herb is made for every person. If you are unsure, please ask your integrative doctor, herbalist, or other professional before consuming.
